Due to it being the worst kept secret in SU history, we are delighted to formally announce the return of former Sports Union President, Ben Graham, to the staff team as we prepare for another action packed year of sport and activity at Heriot-Watt.
Ben has been a valued and committed member of the Sports Union throughout his time at Heriot-Watt and, as well as being a former SU President and Sports Personality of the Year, he has fulfilled many different roles including Squash Club President, Social Secretary, SU Promotions Executive and returned in 2020/21 as an SU Ambassador, Squash Coordinator alongside completing his Masters degree.
On starting his new role as Sports Union Administrator (Club Development), Ben said,
“It’s brilliant to be back, even though it doesn’t really feel like I’ve been away! The rest of the team in the office and across Oriam have been brilliant with me and I’m buzzing to be back working with all of them. Looking ahead to September, I’m excited to get to know all the new club committees and helping get the clubs back to a really strong position to continue to offer the best experience to the students as they arrive back. Bring on another year of being the best Sports Union in the country!”
In this brand new role, Ben will support the volunteer student committees to run all 32 SU Clubs to a high standard in line with the SU’s club accreditation scheme, WattMark, and will lead on recruiting and supporting the SU’s coaching staff. He will also have a focus on widening participation, to increase the SU’s reach in the HWU student community beyond those who are attracted to traditional club sport.
Current Sports Union President, Amber Taylor, who has officially entered her second term (for the first time in Heriot-Watt Sports Union history), is equally enthused for the year ahead,
“I am so excited that Ben is back working with us, his past experience and knowledge will be so beneficial, utilising this going into another smashing year ahead. Excited for things to come!”
We are confident that Ben’s experience in, and passion for, student sport will serve him well in this new role and we are really excited to be heading into the new academic year with such a strong staff team in place to support our inspiring student volunteers.
