Winners of Blues and Volunteering Awards 2026

The annual Blues and Volunteers Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Sports Union, is a fantastic celebration of the success, dedication, and tireless efforts of our student athletes, coaches, and volunteers. 

The volunteering force of the Sports Union represents a massive community action and contributes enormously both to student life and the wider community, with more than 23,649 hours of volunteering delivered over the past year. Congratulations to all our award winners, whose achievements and impact over the past year continue to inspire. A full list of this year’s recipients can be found below.

  • Bronze (50 hours of volunteering) – 37 students received their bronze award
  • Silver (100 hours of volunteering) – 47 students received their silver award
  • Gold (200 hours of volunteering) – 34 students received their gold award
  • Gold Plus (350 hours of volunteering) – 19 students received their gold plus award
  • Platinum (500 hours of volunteering) – 15 students received their platinum award
  • Blues Awards for outstanding sporting achievement – 48 students.

Len Burnett Trophy – Ben Stobie (Boat, Kayak, Equestrian)

This award is presented to a Platinum Award winner who has demonstrated the biggest contribution to their club, the Sports Union and the student experience during their time at Heriot-Watt.

Bell Connor Memorial Award – Finlay Johnston (Mountaineering)

The award is presented to a member of the Mountaineering Club who has shown initiative and leadership to ensure safety on trips, promotes safety awareness and contributes significantly to the club through passing on relevant knowledge and safety skills to fellow members.

Deputy Principal Award for Leadership – Finlay Johnston (Mountaineering)

This is awarded to an individual, group, committee or club who have shown exceptional leadership in the past year.

Duncan Murray Award  – Ruairidh Seaton (Snowsports)

This award is presented to the winner of the Snowsports Club Championships or, in the absence of a club champs, to the most successful competitor in the club. 

Joy Wilson Trophy  – Rowan Taylor (Athletics)

Donated by Joy Wilson, a supporter of the SU over several years, this award is presented for the fresher performance of the year.

SU Trophy (Team of the Year) – Equestrian BUCS A Team

This trophy is awarded to the team of the year who have performed at a consistently high standard throughout the academic year.

Neil Campbell Trophy – Barney Stewart (Football)

The Neil Campbell Trophy is presented to the Blues winner that has excelled in their sport over the past year.
