Watt a Night!
Traditionally in the third week in February, the entire Sports Union would descend on the Corn Exchange to celebrate in person, as one, the collective successes of our clubs and our members. The pandemic may have halted an in-person celebration, but it certainly did not dampen the determination, enthusiasm and innovation of those involved with the Sports Union, and Watt a Year 2020 proved to be. Online socials, webinars, virtual training sessions and covid officers may have become the new norm but the competition for this years awards was as fierce as ever and the fact that Instagram acted as host for the evening, did not stop our members from dining and dressing in style.
Vice-President May eloquently reflected on the ups and downs of the year before all attention moved to the prizes on offer. Our award winners were announced on the night by being dialled into the ‘Instagram Live’ event- not even our host knew who the winners were going to be! Ultimate Frisbee scooped the Most Improved Club award, following a move up in Watt Mark grade from Bronze to Gold, a highly successful Iron Fives event and strong membership engagement. The Football Mens 1st team sit atop of East of Scotland Division 1 Conference A and in the previous academic year were promoted to BUCS 1A. Captain Gregor Macdonald accepted the Team of the Year trophy on their behalf.
The second club award of the award, the Mieras Trophy for Social Club of the Year, went to Volleyball. Our Club and Team of the Year from last year produced a varied and innovative social calendar and, fittingly, the ‘after-party’ to this event with an online Lip Sync Battle. Next up, was the Johnston Trophy for Sports Personality of the Year, where Alice Tilly beat off strong competition from Aonghus Sellar and Devon May to claim the award. The Peter Wilson Trophy for Club of the Year rounded out the evenings gong-giving and this award was accepted by Tori Foster on behalf of the Netball Club. Last years beaten finalists again had an exceptional year- maintaining strong partnerships with Dunedin Netball Club and a charitable partner in Zimbabwe and running a well-organised and innovative training schedule for their membership during strict Covid-19 restrictions. Well done to all our wonderful winners and commiserations to those who missed out this time!
Amber finished by thanking all clubs, partners, members, staff and coaches for all their efforts in what has been an unprecedented and challenging time, but one which has produced many success stories.
