We are delighted to be hosting a panel of accomplished former Sports Union volunteers event for out Value of Volunteering Webinar. The event will be hosted by Oriam Director Ross Campbell who with discuss with our panellists their time as volunteers at the university, professional experiences and career highlights.

The time is coming to put yourself forward for volunteer opportunities within the University, whether that is one of the many volunteer opportunities in the Sports Union or the Student Union! This event will demonstrate the value of volunteering in a variety of capacities whether this is part of our Club Committees or our Sports Union Executive Officers, there are so many ways to get involved!

This event is open to everyone regardless of where you are in the world and whether you are a Sports Union member or not; the more the merrier! Graduated from Heriot-Watt University with a Mathematics Degree.

Mike Tumilty

Career History – Currently Global Chief Operating Officer at Standard Life Aberdeen. Former Professional Football Referee, including matches in the Champions League and Europa League.

Sports Union Experience – Club Captain of HWUFC during his final year at University and played as a Goalkeeper for the 1st team.

Heriot Watt University Involvement – Graduated in 1994 with a degree in Economics


Ross Simpson

Career History – Currently Assistant Director and Head of Sport at Edinburgh University. Formerly SSS Sports Admin and Sports Manager and Sports Co-ordinator at Edinburgh University. Deputy Chef De Mission GB Students World University Games Naples 2019 and Chengdu 2021

Sports Union Experience – Sports Union President 2008/09. Sports Union Executive Comittee Member 2007/08. HWU Hockey Club President

Heriot-Watt University Involvement – Graduated in 2008 with a Management and Marketing Degree.


Katy MacGregor

Career History – Competitions Manager at Netball Scotland and Strathclyde Sirens Netball Team. Assistant Event Manager for the 2018 Gymnastics European Championships. Event Manager at the SSE Hydro.

Sports Union Experience – Sports Union President 2014/15. Various committee roles in Netball, Hockey and Gaelic Club. Sports Union Executive Officer. Sports Union Ambassador. Currently still coaching HWU Netball Team.

Heriot-Watt University Involvement – Graduated in 2014 with a degree in Chemistry.


Amber Taylor

Sports Union Experience – Sports Union President, Sports Union Executive, Sports Union Ambassador, Dance Club President and heavily involved with the Cheerleading Club.

Heriot-Watt University Involvement – Graduated in 2020 with a degree in Physics.
