Watt is Cycling?

Cycling is the great fun of hoping on a bicycle and getting into the great outdoors, pushing your physical limits or commonly both. With over 10 different disciplines of cycling there’s something for everyone. Here at Heriot watt cycling club we focus on all forms of mountain biking and road cycling.

For us mountain biking is about being out in the countryside, riding some of the best downhill, enduro and cross-country trails that Scotland has to offer and having a good laugh with all your mates. With occasional races through the year.

Road cycling is all about speed and performance. Whether your shoulder-to-shoulder racing your opponent, leading your peloton, or pushing watts in your training. We have weekly rides around Edinburgh and many opportunities to compete through the year.

What does a typical season involve?

Mountain Biking

We usually have weekly mountain bike rides to the world class locations we have nearby, with transport provided by the University.

Riding locations include: Glentress, Innerlithen, Golfie, Cademuire, Thornilee, Aberfoyle, Aberfeldy, Comrie Croft, Mambos, Ballo, Dunkeld, Ae, Laggan.

We also have at least one weekend trip per semester to further afield locations. In the past this has included Fort William, Aviemore, the Lake District and Wales.

Road & Track

This year we are teaming up with Edinburgh university cycling club to bring more road opportunities to the club. This will mean weekly group road rides of different skill levels with the addition of more remote area weekend trips. Previously members have travelled to the UCI road world championships in Yorkshire and this year we hope to attend some British Cycling races as well as BUCS.

Competitions

Our main event of the year for mountain biking is the student championships (BUCS), which is a weekend event comprising of a downhill race, against all other UK university clubs.

Road cycling hosts a lot more opportunities to compete, with a few different styles of racing. We can send competing members to BUCS, Scottish champs, TTs and more.

The level of riding in our club is super high now – with riders taking podiums in national races and others racing abroad.
