Watt is Ice Skating?

The Heriot-Watt University Ice Skating Club is the newest fully fledged Sports Union club as of 2024! We welcomed our first members in September 2023 and we cannot wait to continue our journey with more new members from September this year.

Our committee is currently home to fans of Ice Hockey, Figure and Recreational Ice Skating in equal amounts – no matter what form of Ice Skating you’re interested in, or what skill level you are at, you are definitely welcome alongside us. We look forward to seeing you at our sessions on the ice and/or for some fun times at our socials to make some unforgettable memories throughout your university experience!

Our committee is also a very welcoming and friendly bunch, and we are more than happy to chat and provide more information as requested. For the latest information, check out our Instagram page and feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Club Pathway

Taster Session

The club aims to host a Taster Session sometime during Welcome Week or Week 1 of semester. This will be free entry for any student and will be a great way to try out Ice Skating, meet our committee and ask any questions in person.

Do keep a close eye on our Instagram page and we’ll be sure to let you all know when this will run, as well as other social events and session times during the academic year!

Lessons

For less experiences skaters (or those wanting to push their skills) there are lessons available at the Murrayfield Ice Rink via the British Ice Skating “Learn to Skate” programme. There will be an additional cost associated, but the club aims to subsidise this to aid you in your skating development.

Our more veteran skaters are also more than willing to assist you as best as they can during sessions, in which all skill levels are more than welcome.

Recreation

We primarily focus on recreation opportunities and building up out community together. Sessions will run in tandem with public sessions at our local Murrayfield Ice Rink so as to make Ice Skating cheaper, and so more accessible, for you. Entry feels will be covered entirely for a limited number of members each week.

Competition

Whilst our primary focus is on recreation, we do hope to boost our presence in Figure Skating competitions in the future. Both Murrayfield Ice Rink & Aberdeen University Ice Skating hosted a competition in the last year that we attended and we aim to build on this over time.

Please feel free to reach out to our committee via Instagram or email if this is something you are interested in.

Club Community

Community is a big focus for our club. We will be running socials throughout the year; including various activities, such as crazy golf & themed nights out, and occasionally joining up with other sports clubs along the way!

For all the latest information, please check our Instagram page.

Club Benefits

As a club member, you’ll have access to a generous discount for any public session at the Murrayfield Ice Rink; we will additionally cover entry fees once a week for a limited number. Lessons to enhance your skills will also be subsidised, and you will be welcome to all social events throughout the year.

In addition, we are partnered with a sports brand, providing you with a discount on clothing, accessories and skating equipment. Discount codes will be made available to all club members – although do reach out for advice on skating equipment before you buy!

How do I join Ice Skating?

In order to join any Sports Union club, you will first need an Oriam membership. This membership provides you the ability to join any club for a one-off fee, as well as access to a world-class training facility and a variety of exercise classes freely available to join.

Oriam and club memberships can be purchased from either the Oriam app or the reception in Oriam.

Do note that you are not required to have an Oriam membership in order to attend any club taster session run in the first week – it is our recommendation that you try any and all of these!
