A massive well done for getting to the end of the semester – we made it! Massive good luck to everyone that still have exams left and for the ones who have done some already, well done!
This semester was a special one as we finally got back to doing what we love, it still wasn’t easy to remobilise sport and activity but we absolutely smashed that challenge!
Reflecting on the last few months, there has been so many great things achieved and some top class highlights!
The start of semester kicked off with a bang, from taster sessions to Oriam tours to finishing up with our excellent Watt Welcome Fair! It was great to do the Watt Welcome Fair again along with the Student Union and the University again, this year we managed to add more value and fun to it by creating a ‘festival’ vibe outside in the walled garden. We manged to showcase different sports and societies alongside having challenges that students could get involved with, this event once again was a sell out with c.1000 students and was a huge success! To add onto the success of this, there were a whopping 1,262 students across 100 different taster sessions during Welcome Week, which resulted in 62% of these students converting to official club members!
After a long 20-month absence of sporting competition, we were buzzing to welcome back BUCS/SSS fixtures and other forms of competition. We welcomed the start of fixtures and re-introduced our varsity point system with our Warm Up Wednesday Event, this was a great day with a buzzing atmosphere on and off the pitch. Since then, we have had 221 BUCS fixtures so far with 105 watt-wins! Unfortunately, we are sitting at 11-7 to Edinburgh with varsity points, but there is still plenty times pre-varsity in March to rack up points!
We had other crackin’ campaigns, fundraisers and events on this year and even better, we managed to do it in person! We ended last month by raising a whopping £15,000 for Movember and £2,194 for Lothian Disability Sport through our SU Strictly Come Dancing event. In October we celebrated Women in Sport Week with a series of videos from the women in our SU discussing their experiences in their sport. As well as this we have also supported and raised awareness for other campaigns such as Mental Health Week and Black History Month.
We are wrapping up semester 1 with 1400 members of the Watt Family and we can’t be happier that although it was still a challenging semester, it was a hell of a lot of fun with getting back to training, competitions and events!
Enjoy celebrating the holidays and the well-deserved break and we can’t wait to welcome you back in January!
