About Our Club
The club’s main focus is on team play, competing in the Scottish Student Sport (SSS) competitions. We aim to provide a number of club social events and club outings for non-team players.
We are currently developing a strong partnership with a local golf club, Kingsknowe. With this partnership we will be organising a few group events on the course throughout the year for the more experienced players and coaching opportunities for those with less experience. One of golf’s main aims for the year is to create a culture within the sport at Heriot-Watt that people of all abilities feel comfortable to join, as well as offering both competitive and recreational opportunities to our members.
Our club charter
We aim to provide the following service to all our members:
- To provide an opportunity for any team member to practice with the assistance of a coach at each session.
- To provide a range of competitive opportunities to allow members to compete individually or for the University.
- To provide an opportunity for members to gain a worthwhile social experience through the sport.
What does a typical season involve?
Team training
Through our partnership with Kingsknowe Golf Club we are able to offer coaching sessions for all players within the club whether you are picking up a golf club for the first time or a more intermediate player. For beginners we can offer a 1 hour group coaching session that would run weekly on a Friday afternoon for 6 weeks by the head professional at Kingsknowe. This session is depending entirely on assuring numbers each week therefore payment would be required up front for the entire 6 week block, if more people are interested then there will be potential for an extra session added. For the more intermediate player the head professional has offered to provide 2 hour on course playing lessons at a time that would be required to be organised, these sessions would have to be pre booked and would be limited to 3 at any one time. These sessions are extremely useful in improving your golf and lowering your handicap as it will allow the professional to see where you are throwing away shots and then address those areas.
We will also run range sessions throughout the year which all members will be able to attend regardless of experience.
Competitions
The club also competes against other Scottish Universities in league and cup matches, as well as competing in several SSS stroke play events that are held throughout the year at some very high quality golf courses, culminating in the yearly individual and team Championships at Lossiemouth GC which is held at the end of March.
