Watt is Ice Skating?
The Heriot-Watt University Ice Skating Club is the newest fully fledged Sports Union club as of 2024! We welcomed our first members in September 2023 and our vibrant community is always welcoming new members.
Our committee is currently home to fans of Ice Hockey, Figure and Recreational Ice Skating in equal amounts – no matter what form of Ice Skating you’re interested in, or what skill level you are at, you are definitely welcome alongside us. We look forward to seeing you at our training sessions on and off the ice and/or for some fun times at our socials to make some unforgettable memories throughout your university experience!

Club Pathway
Taster Session
The club aims to host a Taster Session sometime during Welcome Week or Week 1 of semester at Murrayfield Ice Arean to try out skating and get a feel of the club, and an off-ice Taster Session during Week 1 at the Oriam to teach some basic stretching and conditioning that will help with safety and movement on ice. Both will be free entry for any student and a great way to try out Ice Skating, meet our committee and ask any questions in person.

Lessons
For less experienced skaters (or those wanting to push their skills) there are lessons available at the Murrayfield Ice Arena via the British Ice Skating “Learn to Skate” programme.
Our more veteran skaters are also more than willing to assist you as best as they can during sessions, in which all skill levels are more than welcome. We also have a Figure Officer and a Hockey Officer who can help people with one-to-one sessions.
Recreation
We primarily focus on recreation opportunities and building up out community together. Sessions will run in tandem with public sessions at our local Murrayfield Ice Arena so as to make Ice Skating cheaper, and so more accessible, for you. Entry fees will be covered entirely for members each week and Skate Hire is included.
Competition
Whilst our primary focus is on recreation, we do boost our presence in Figure Skating competitions where we can. Edinburgh University Skating & ourselves hosted a competition in the last year that we had several members compete (and win medals) at, and the club is looking to take an overnight trip to the ice rink that will be hosting the competition this year.

Club Community
Community is a big focus for our club. We will be running socials throughout the year; including various activities, such as crazy golf & themed nights out, and occasionally joining up with other sports clubs along the way!

Club Benefits
As a club member, you’ll have access to a generous discount for any public session at the Murrayfield Ice Arena; we will additionally cover entry fees once a week for a limited number, and you will be welcome to all social events throughout the year.
In addition, we are partnered with a sports brand, providing you with a discount on clothing, accessories and skating equipment. Discount codes will be made available to all club members – although do reach out for advice on skating equipment before you buy!
