Watt is Badminton?
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. The forms of the game are “singles” with one player per side of the court and “doubles” with two players on each side of the court.
Heriot-Watt Badminton Club is one of the oldest clubs within the Sports Union. We cater for all abilities, providing opportunities to play competitively either for our BUCS team or Lothian League team or to play casually at our recreational sessions.

Recreational Sessions
Our recreational sessions involve playing doubles in a relaxing and fun environment. For these sessions, plastic shuttles are used. Look out for opportunities to play more competitively within the club throughout the year, whether it be our club ladder, in-club tournaments or playing against another club/university. Here’s all the times of our rec sessions:
Day | Time | Location |
Monday | 17:30-19:00 | Sports Hall 1, Court A |
Monday | 18:45-20:15 | Sports Hall 2 |
Thursday | 18:45-20:15 | Sports Hall 2 |
Thursday | 20:15-21:45 | Sports Hall 2 |
Team Training
Our team sessions are designed for more advanced players who have been selected for the Team by our Captain (Elena) and coach (Alan). We have two teams:
Mixed 1s – Competing in BUCS 1A league matches on Saturdays.
Men’s 2s – Competing in the local Lothian League on Monday/Wednesday evenings.

We also have a range of social events throughout the year, these can be found on our social media accounts or by word of mouth at club sessions. You do not have to be a member of the team to attend these.
Not sure if badminton is for you? Come along to one of our sessions, borrow a racket and shuttlecock and give it a go. Be sure to look out for our Committee at one of our sessions!
