Course: MENG Chemical Engineering, 3rd year

How did you get into your sport?

I started competitive cycling when I was 13. I started out racing cross-country mountain biking and I was inspired to start competing by my cousins who were winning national level cross-country and downhill races at the time. I changed to road and track when I was 18 because I felt like my skill sets were better suited to this than to mountain biking.

What are the best and most challenging things about your sport?

The best thing about cycling is the freedom; you can pretty much go wherever you like. There’s a sense of achievement when you make it to wherever you are headed, whether up a hill or to a certain place that’s far away. The most frustrating aspect of cycling is the regular issues ranging from inconvenient punctures to broken wheels and frames.

What have been your biggest achievements to date?

  • Multiple Scottish Cross Country Mountain Bike Series winner as a youth.
  • 2019 Scottish Scratch race Champion and also podiumed in the Individual Pursuit.

What are your goals in your sport?

Represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 in the team pursuit on the track.

What do you do to relax when you’re not training or competing?

Between studying and training there is very little time for anything else however I spend most of the free time I do have relaxing with a movie.

Who is your sporting icon, and why?

Geraint Thomas because of how varied his career has been, going from the Olympic Games on the track to the Spring Classics on the road, and then to winning the Tour de France.
