Course: Mechanical Engineering, 1st year

How did you get into your sport?

Through my dad who also sailed, then a friend that was starting a race training group.

What are the best and most challenging things about your sport?

Sailing is a weather depended sport which makes it incredibly dynamic and changeable; this can both make racing incredibly competitive and interesting but can also be a source of great frustration if the wind shift doesn’t go your way or the wind dies half way through a race and you are two miles from shore!

What have been your biggest achievements to date?

My proudest event was the 2019 National Championships. I sailed with a complete beginner to the class of boat, battling challenging winds and two-metre waves to still place 9th overall.

In the 2018 season our overall result in the race series was 5th and 2nd in our age category.

What are your goals in your sport?

Over the next year I aim to Gain experience and compete in the Rolex Fast-net Race. This is an offshore race of 630miles and a completely different discipline than I have previously competed in.

I also aim to compete and preform well in the Wazsp Nationals this year, though it is my first year in this class of boat.

Previously I aimed to start sailing the Olympic class, the 49er, however this became unrealistic due to travel restrictions and the financial implications of Covid. Now I am Transitioning to the Waszp and have joined the British Keelboat Academy to learn about offshore sailing and other disciplines.

What do you do to relax when you’re not training or competing?

I love to go kite surfing or hill walking when the weather is good.

Who is your sporting icon, and why?

My sporting icon is Rory Hunter; he was once my coach and has been through a lot of career changes due to factors out of his control. Despite this he is now the 2019 Waszp World champion and is starting a Olympic Campaign.

Tell us a fun fact…

Sailing is a sport with a complicated points system that allows you to win an event without ever winning a race. You can even come last in a race and still win the event overall!
