Watt is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo literally means “The Art Of Hand And Foot” but it is much more than that. To put it simply Taekwondo is a version of unarmed combat design for the purpose of self-defence. It is the scientific use of the body in the method of self-defence, a body that has gained the ultimate use of its facilities through intensive physical and mental training.

It is a martial art that has no equal in either power or technique. As Taekwondo is a complete martial art, the discipline of the art must go hand in hand with learning the physical advantages of doing such a powerful art. The first lesson that the students learn are the five tennents of Taekwondo, which are: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control and Indomitable Spirt.

Want to increase your fitness, improve your confidence, or just pick up some self-defence skills? Then Taekwondo could be the sport for you.

Competitions, Gradings and other opportunities

Student members who meet the required standard have the opportunity to compete in BUCS and BUTL – this can be in sparring, patterns or both. Regular gradings and seminars take place throughout the year for those who wish to progress to the next belt. Gradings are an excellent opportunity for students to test their own skill level. Even if you don’t want to compete there are opportunities to spectate competitions with other members of the club.
